Aaah calamari rings, how we love them! Let us count all of the delicious ways that there are to prepare you for our holiday gatherings. Although fried and slathered with a garlicky dipping sauce tends to be one of the most favored, there are other ways to enjoy this denizen of the deep. For today’s post, we wanted to focus on how to bake calamari rings perfectly.
In order bake four servings of calamari rings like a pro, you’ll need 1 pound of rings and the following items.
Crunchy Calamari Rings
- Garlic salt and black pepper (to taste)
- 1 lg. Plastic bag, resealable
- 1 lg. Baking dish or sheet
- 1 roll Paper towels
- 1 tub Shortening
- ½ cup Corn flour
- 2 Mixing bowls
- ¼ cup Olive oil
- 1-1/4 cup Milk
- ½ cup 00 flour
- ½ cup Panko
Begin by pouring the milk into a mixing bowl and adding the calamari rings. Let the rings soak in the milk for about an hour. Doing so will go a long way in making the rings tender. While the rings are soaking in the milk, grease the baking dish with shortening and preheat the oven. The oven should ideally be at 400 degrees Fahrenheit prior to baking the calamari rings.
Once the calamari rings are done soaking in the milk, pat them dry with paper towels. Then fill another mixing bowl with the olive oil. Toss the calamari rings into the oil. Make sure that each calamari ring is well coated. Otherwise, the breading won’t stick to them as well.
Speaking of the breading, proceed by pouring the 00 flour, corn flour, Panko and seasonings into a plastic bag. Shake the bag until the ingredients are well combined. Continue by placing the oiled calamari rings into the bag. Shake the bag multiple times until all of the calamari rings are completely coated with the breading.
Next, place the calamari rings, single file, into the baking dish or onto the cooking sheet. Then put the dish or sheet into the oven for 20 minutes. At the end of the 20 minutes, the calamari rings should be brown, crisp and ready to serve. When they are ready to be served, place them onto a platter with an array of your favorite dipping sauces.
