One of the most important things about wine, besides pairing the correct one with the meal being enjoyed, is to serve it at the correct temperature. Of course, personal taste trumps all else; if an ice cold super chilled red is your thing, don’t let anyone stop you from enjoying it. However, for those who’d like a rough guide to what the average wine enthusiast might do, here are a few suggestions on how to quickly chill wine.

First of all, choose the wine to chill. By chill, we mean very cold, but not frozen. White and sparkling white wines are traditionally the ones to chill. (Even red wines shouldn’t actually be served at room temperature, contrary to popular opinion, but rather at about 50 degrees F, which is slightly below room temperature, assuming your room is a castle and your wine is stored in the basement next to the dungeon.)

The ideal way to chill a bottle of wine is slowly in the refrigerator. Unfortunately, life doesn’t always cooperate by giving you the one element besides wine and temperature that is absolutely necessary…time.

    Fill an ice bucket with ice (duh!), water, and salt (huh?). Interestingly, the salt helps the ice to break down, making the water colder faster. Then, place the wine of your choice in the bucket for 6 minutes.

  • Place an empty bottle in the freezer. Whenever you find yourself in need of a quickly chilled bottle of wine, simply poor the wine into the already frozen bottle, and in 10 minutes, you’re ready to serve.

  • Some retailers sell a special “ice jacket”, like the wine diaper or B&M ice bag, that can be stored in the freezer and wrapped around a bottle of wine for 10 minutes when needed.

  • For the desperate and daring, go ahead and try the very first idea (don’t be afraid to admit it) that popped into your mind, put the whole bottle of wine in the freezer! The caveat here is to leave it in for no longer than 15 minutes. In fact, you can even decrease that amount of time by wrapping a wet towel around the bottle beforehand.
